I'm Back! And I'm Less Naive.

Hello, my friends! Did you miss me?

I have spent the past month moving most of my posts to another blog, one that will remain private, so I can make this page public again.

I tried taking myself off the grid completely, but I forgot about people who have pinned recipes, crafts, and organization ideas from this page over the years. I was contacted by a few of them within the first week or two, asking me to send them their favorite recipe, etc.

I'm hoping I fixed everything so that creepy people will leave me and my little website alone. I spent many late nights on my laptop, Mike snoring beside me, up until midnight deleting anything questionable. I deleted almost 1000 posts about my family, removed many pictures from posts that were left, and scanned countless posts for key words that might lead the wrong people to this page.

So I just wanted to drop a note to say that I was gone. But now I'm back.!I'll still post less frequently than in years past, but you can count on me for awesome recipes and ideas that I need to share with the world.

I hope you had a blessed Easter!  We did something a little odd this year: my in laws made plans to go to Mike's brothers' house for the first time, so we decided to go untraditional. We let the kids plan the day, the menu at each meal, the activities, basically ALL of Easter.

This lead to a make-your-own-pizza bar for dinner. Everyone LOVED their creations and it was as far from ham and scalloped potatoes as you can get! After dinner, we had an ice cream sundae bar, along with a carrot cake that Kaylin and I made, plus a couple of desserts my mom brought over. There was so. much. food. for just the 6 of us.
Ryan made his pizza into a face, Kaylin made a heart, and Jason's pizza looked like...Nevada.
Our carrot cake...the green half is the cream cheese frosting.  Kaylin was willing to put it on there as long as there was an alternative for her! Kaylin did the fondant, she asked me to do the words. She loves cake decorating!
So. Much. Dessert.

I'm glad to be back in blogland! I just hope I don't regret it...I was freaked out BEYOND words last month. I hope I didn't lose all of my followers last month!  Is someone still out there reading this?!

Time to Go Private?

Last week, I got an odd comment (which I promptly deleted), followed by a horribly vulgar comment yesterday about Kaylin. I flipped out and immediately changed the settings of my blogs to private. For years, I have been under the naive notion that only people like me read my blog. Because who cares about my mundane life other than moms like me?

I am sad to make my blog private, because I have really enjoyed writing to strangers over the years about mom things: cooking, baking, healthy living, organizing, party ideas, and small glimpses into our life.

But it's time to transition away from sharing on the world wide web. There are just too many crazies out there!
The only picture I would allow Ryan to upload to his FitBit profile. Something in me was cautious last week and today, it slapped me in the face and shook me to my core.

A Blogging Evolution

Hello, readers!  I can't believe it's been more than 2 months since I last wrote a blog post. Honestly, there's been plenty to write about, but over the past year, I've started wondering if anyone still reads my ramblings?

Then I got a sweet, concerned email from a long-time follower (thanks DeeAnna!) wondering if I'm doing ok. YES! I'm still alive and well. I've just been reflecting a little.

My blog began in 2007 as a one-stop-shop for my family and friends to get caught up on pictures of my growing kids and to see a glimpse of our daily life. Back then, I was known as Three Blondes and a Redhead...Kaylin was an infant and Ryan was only 2 years old. Within a year, I had dozens of followers. As an overwhelmed stay-at-home-mom, I didn't realize I needed to be heard...to have a voice. I appreciated that others understood my exhaustion. I loved sharing recipe ideas and organization tips with strangers all over the globe. Friendships developed with people I would never meet in parts of the world I may never visit.
A few months before Jason was born, I evolved into Intentionally Katie, my page got a facelift, and things got big-time. Dozens of readers became hundreds of readers. I actually met people around town who recognized me from my blog...it was a trip!

Then when I began homeschooling in 2011, I lost some people. I've always written about our daily life, which was soon consumed with all things homeschooling, and many couldn't relate. I had less time to compose and publish blogs posts (oh, but I started so many...!) and people got sick of checking in, only to find nothing new.

Looking back over 2015, my single-digit, monthly post numbers are truly pathetic. If nothing else, I love journaling about our life! And I hardly have anything to look back upon.

Blogs don't seem to be nearly as widespread as they were when I began writing nearly 9 years ago. Sure, there are certainly plenty of blogs to read, but with other social media outlets to stay connected and get ideas, I have noticed my followers have dwindled, comments are scarce, and I tend to wonder if anyone has the desire to read about my relatively mundane world...?

I also wonder how safe it is to post pictures of my kids. I don't want to sound paranoid, but this world is going downhill at warp speed and there are some crazies out there! I've strongly considered making this blog private, since it's turned into less "struggling moms, you're not alone" and more about a personal memoir of my kids and our family moments.

But those decisions are for another day. What have we been up to these past few months?

In October, just as my body was finally recovering from a miscarriage, Mike and I headed to Los Cabos, Mexico for an all-expenses-paid FREE vacation. This trip was earned by the top 19 people at Tastefully Simple and I was one of them!!! It was fantastic. We snorkeled, went horseback riding on the beach, relaxed, relaxed and relaxed some more. We needed this getaway! Badly. We came home and I got back to work, trying to earn the top trip to Italy next year!
In November, Ryan finished up his first season of tackle football and Jason ended his 2nd soccer season. Weekly practices for both boys, tumbling for Kaylin and games all weekend long kept us very. busy. After 12 years unmedicated, I decided to go to the doctor and get back on my ADD medicine. It was a decision I'd wrestled with and finally just threw in the towel and did it. Things are so much clearer in my head! Later in the month, our house was invaded by workers as we got the house and cabinets painted and finishing Kaylin's "tween" room. November is a blur.
In December, it was all about Christmas: Baking, Christmas movies, holiday parties, the whole sha-bang. We had a more mellow holiday season this year...I wrapped our gifts just days before Christmas and we didn't even visit Santa until Christmas Eve! But it was stress-free. The month/year ended with the sad news that my favorite grandmother passed away. She was sick for a very long time, but it was still a sad time for my family.

In January, we celebrated the New Year up north and went sledding, had our family pictures taken professionally (FINALLY...it's been years!), I went to Atlanta for a leadership conference, and Kaylin got braces. Mike and I also jumped into our 2nd complete round of Whole30. And I've been working out like crazy to get my pre-pregnancy, pre-Dallas-move-stress-eating body back. Yoga, lifting weights, kickboxing, cycle, I take about 6-8 classes each week and I'm finally feeling comfortable in my own skin again.

That brings us to February. Earlier this month, I contemplated ending our homeschool journey. I was burned out, the kids were sick of it, and I was sick of THEM (just being real). I felt trapped in a life that I'd chosen. After reading about others with this same experience, I made the drastic decision to pull the plug on academics. We go to the library 1-2 times a week, pull 30-40 books about any and all topics of interest, and we read. A lot. We read together, we read alone, we talk about what we read, the kids do presentations for the rest of the family about what they've learned each day, it is very different and giving us all the break we need. The kids still do math every day, plus a creative journal I bought them each for Christmas, but learning and school is finally becoming fun again. For all of us.
In other news...after many years of wondering, we went through the process to see if Ryan has ADHD like his mama. He asked a lot of questions after I went back on my meds and when I described my symptoms, he said, "It sounds like you're explaining what's in my head."

He was officially diagnosed a couple of weeks ago and we're seeing huge improvements with his new medication. More than anything, his confidence is skyrocketing. He no longer wonders why he struggles with simple tasks, makes silly mistakes in his schoolwork, forgets basic instructions, and a million other things. I have tried battling this issue with homeschooling, nutritional changes, everything I could think of...I wanted medicine to be the last resort, but it was officially time to nip this issue in the bud.

I think that's it!  You're finally caught up on everything within our walls. If you've made it this far, feel free to leave a comment if you'd like me to keep my blog public. Don't be shy! An anonymous comment will do, as long as you're not a psycho stalker. You can be a normal stalker, just not a psycho stalker, because no one has time for that kind of drama. Especially me!

POD UPDATED!

For those of you who give me grief about forever being behind on my Picture of the Day blog, all of my pictures are officially uploaded! They are posted by month, not by week, are completely out of order and have no descriptions attached to them whatsoever, but they're available for your viewing pleasure.

I don't have a very good system for selecting pictures now that I have a Mac, hence my being a slacker all of this year. Plus, the Project Life format changed now that they use Shutterfly for their printing, and I don't need to journal about every picture anymore, so I find myself blowing off that little detail. That's my excuse and I'm sticking to it!

When I have time, I'll write captions. Considering I just caught up uploading the pictures from the past five months, that will probably happen in 2014.  :)

I. Am. Humbled.

While searching for fresh ideas on Pinterest for our 25 Days of Christmas calendar, I came across someone who pinned one of MY posts! That's the first time I've stumbled upon my own blog on Pinterest!!! There was a link to "other" posts from Intentionally Katie and a list of 250 pins popped up. What on Earth?!?

I remember earlier this year noticing that I had 1000 individual log ins on my blog in one day, which is  8-10 times higher than usual. I ended up figuring out that someone pinned my post for No Bake Energy Bites and it spread like wildfire. In fact, those sound pretty tasty right about now...maybe I should whip up a batch?

(ahem, sorry)

While I was glancing through the pins on the list, one of the comments said, "Great website: recipes, meal plans, goals and inspiration." I seriously almost cried!  My head is so huge right now, you have no idea.

Thanks for the ego boost, friends! Whoever is out there pinning my posts...THANK YOU! I wish I knew how to add a "pin this" quick link on my posts to make it easier for you. Someday...

About blogging...

Have you noticed how inconsistently I've been blogging lately?  I feel like I have 10 things to blog about one week, then nothing for two weeks.  So annoying.  But hey - when I'm inspired to write, I go with it. If I'm uninspired, I don't want to waste your time.

I'm not the type of blogger who brainstorms ideas and pre-plans what I'm going to write about and when I'll post it. I write when I come up with something that I want to share and if I happen to spit out three blog posts in one day, I just post-date them to publish throughout the week. For instance, this post is being written on a Monday and will post on a Friday. I like to spread the love throughout the week.
Recipes. Why don't I post recipes anymore?!?! Simple: I haven't been experimenting with new dishes lately.  BUT, that is changing.  I have tons of recipes clogging up my Pinterest account of things that I not only want to try, but I will try.  Soon.  And I will be reposting the delicious ones on my blog because I am seriously sick of linking back to other blogs only to find that the link is broken after a few months. So I'll be the cheesy blogger who changes 1/2 tsp salt to 1/4 tsp salt to "alter" the recipe enough to repost, but I will always link back to the website where the recipe originated.

POD. One complaint I keep hearing is that I don't keep my Picture of the Day blog updated anymore.  I know, I know.  Sorry, guys.  First of all, I completely fell out of the habit of taking pictures every day.  After three years of barely skipping a day, my camera doesn't come out very often anymore.  Secondly, by the time I got on the bandwagon and signed up to do Becky Higgins' new Shutterfly book, I noticed that it only comes with like 30 pages, not enough to make 52 week-long layouts.  I have to pay extra for the extra pages...so bummed!  Plus, the space for journaling isn't as handy to copy and paste from my POD blog. (*sigh*) I don't have the time to be creative anymore, so it hasn't been on my priority list.  When I update my POD blog, it tends to be a month at a time, which is how I might end up constructing my 2012 book at this point.

Homeschooling. Yes, I realize some of you are sick of hearing about our journey through homeschooling.  This will not turn into a homeschooling blog, but it's always been a place where I write about our life and right now, homeschooling is a huge chunk of our daily life.  When I had a new baby, I wrote about those struggles and victories. When we struggle with a parenting issue, I blog about it. When I began homeschooling, the same is true.

The good news is that most of my dear readers are moms of little ones. I will be posting about our many adventures with new craft ideas, easy homemade science experiments and kid-friendly kitchen creations that you can try with your own non-homeschooled kids throughout the long, hot summer.  So you'll benefit if you hang around.  :)

Confession time...

In the last couple of weeks, I've realized a few things.

I've realized that, now that I can get email on my iPhone, I hardly sit down to a real computer anymore.

I've realized that if I don't blog about a topic within 24 hours of thinking of an idea, the inspiration disappears forever.

I've realized that I miss blogging more regularly. It keeps my head clear of extra "stuff" floating around all the time.

I've realized that I eat healthy throughout the week, then ruin everything by blowing it on the weekends. I then need to take the week to balance my weight with healthier eating until Friday hits, then the cycle starts over.

I've realized that without regular workouts, eating healthy during the week might not undo the weekend damage.  Yes, it's that bad.

I've realized that the 3:00 hour is bad for me. Since Ryan began Kindergarten a few years back, the "after school snack" concept has turned into a daily sweet treat habit that is difficult to break.

I've realized, since starting our "no yelling for Lent" idea, that I don't raise my voice nearly as often as I thought. I still get frustrated, but I'm as loud about it as I used to be.

I've realized that when I get loud, it happens quickly and seemingly out of the blue.

I've realized that I tend to yell when I have a one-track mind about something and I'm thrown off course with bickering, begging or other short-people interruptions.

I've realized that Jason interrupts me. A lot.

I've realized that I don't like hurrying around and that, since we began homeschooling, rushing has become a pet peeve.

I've realized that I've developed a bit of a bad attitude about the "disruption" that sending Kaylin to afternoon Kindergarten has become every day.

I've realized that half-day Kindergarten half-days are a complete waste of time. I drove Kaylin to school at noon on Friday, only to realize that it was a half-day and that everyone was already gone. I can thank the fact that Outlook crashed for my ignorance about the school schedule change!

I've realized that I don't enjoy working my life around someone else's time table. (read: Kaylin's school) This seemed selfish and controlling until I compared it to someone who has run their own business by their own rules but is suddenly thrown back into working for a regimented government office with little flexibility. We get into a morning groove with homeschooling, then if I'm not paying attention to the clock, I need to stop everything to rush through lunch and race Kaylin to the bus stop. I can't wait to have her home with us all day.

I've realized that there are days that I don't step outside until its time to round up the kids from the front yard for dinner. Years ago, this would have bothered me beyond measure, but now, not so much.

I've realized that I was so grateful for February to be over and that I didn't have to wake up early every day anymore, that I completely forgot about my March goal of not using Facebook for month. OOPS. So if it's March 5th today, I suppose I can't check Facebook until April 5th. That sounds fair.

I've realized that Pinterest is not my enemy.  A friend explained that she peeks around for 15 minutes each night before bed and that's it.  So, after weeks (months?) of having an account and refusing to log in, I am officially enjoying Pinterest. In healthy doses.

I've realized that since losing all of my Outlook files, my virtual organization is a mess. I've enjoyed synching my new iPhone with my new Macbook, but I'm still not doing things as efficiently as I was way back at the beginning of February. That was an eternity ago...

I've realized that keeping my "Picture of the Day" project organized is much more difficult with my Mac. I'm not used to how my photos download and where to store them and haven't taken the time to mess around with it enough. So I have dozens upon dozens of pictures on my camera just waiting to be downloaded. But I avoid.

I've realized that I would love to do some Spring Cleaning, but I just don't have the time. Or think I don't have the time.  I could probably squeeze in a little each day.  I should probably squeeze in a little each day. Stay tuned for more on that.

I realize that this post wasn't nearly as juicy as the title inferred, but I had to get your attention somehow! Life's not exactly interesting these days, which is fine by me.

Bringing Back Q&A Wednesday with Kay-tay

What ever happened to Q&A Wednesday? Somehow, I stopped answering questions from the comments this Fall. But it's time to bring it back.

So this post has two purposes:

1. Please feel free to leave a comment with a question you'd like me to answer.

2. If you would like to see more posts on a certain topic (it feels like I rarely post new recipes anymore) - leave a comment with that request, too.

I know I have a few new homeschoolers following my blog, yet there are some old faithful readers who couldn't care less about that piece of my life.  I guess I've just been wondering what you'd like to read about.

Crafts?

Organization?

Cooking?

Goals?

Parenting ideas?

My boring daily life...?  (that was for you, Mom)

Please take a minute and leave a comment with your thoughts.  Thanks!

Merry Christmas to all...!

I just wanted to take a moment to wish you a very Merry Christmas.  Thank you for taking time out of your busy life to read my ramblings every now and then.  It still blows my mind that anyone cares about what I have to say.

Now get off the computer and go spend time with your family!!!  :)

Priorities, Priorities...

For those who follow my {terribly neglected} Picture of the Day blog, I have finally caught up on the FIVE weeks I was behind. It was on my to-do list every week, I just hadn't gotten around to journalling about the pictures.

My mom sent me an email the other day, with "Remember me?" in the subject line.  This was the email:

Hi Katie,

Remember me? I’m your POD blog.

Yea, it’s been a long while since we’ve seen each other. I know how busy you are, too busy to miss me for sure. But I just wanted you to know that I sure miss you!

Hugs always,
http://katiespod.blogspot.com/

So go ahead, Mom...take a gander.  It's all up to date!

I love my blog!

When I was younger, I used to keep diaries and journals.  As the only child of a Fortune 100 mother, I found myself alone a lot and felt the need to write what was on my mind when there was no one around to talk to.

Don't get me wrong...I loved, loved being an only child.  I enjoyed the solitude.  I preferred not having a sibling who would steal the remote or eat the last granola bar before I could get to it. I got to sit down and veg after school without anyone nagging at me to finish my homework before having free time.  I have no complaints about my childhood.  But I'm getting off the subject...

What I love about this little blog is that it's become a place for me to journal my thoughts, feelings and current struggles.  Sure, I do it pretty publicly, but it is so great to be able to look back at past posts and see what was going on inside my head last year or the year before that.  It's an online time capsule, if you will.

So, for those of you who don't feel like you have time to write in a journal or haven't yet started a personal blog, I'd like to ask you to reconsider.  Not for me, but for YOU.

You can start a blog very easily and choose to keep it private or share it with a select group of friends and family.  You may write in it daily, monthly or just a few times a year.  It's very versatile.  But the best part is that, years from now, you can look back at snapshots of your current life and see how you've grown.  See how your children have grown.  How your marriage has grown.  How your thought processes have evolved and matured.

It's really an incredible ability to have...peeking back inside your own mind, years later.

It doesn't need to be anything grand or fancy...it could purely be for your eyes only.  Wouldn't that be an amazing gift to give your children, should something ever happen to you? Obviously we all hope that would never happen, but none of us know when God will call us home.  (on that morbid note...)

What are you waiting for? Give it a try! And for those of you who have a blog, but rarely write on it...go write yourself a post.  What's on your mind today?

Out of the Habit of Writing

Does anyone miss me? I mean, I've kind of been around.  You all know what I'm feeding my family for dinner, if nothing else, right?

I feel like I haven't been truly writing in weeks.  Yes, I've written posts, but during my March Spring Cleaning Challenge, I didn't want to disrupt the flow of each day's tasks, so I accidentally got out of the habit of writing my sporadic thoughts, feelings and ideas on my little corner of the cyber world.  I have narrated some posts through pictures this month, but I kind of feel like that's a cop out.  I honestly think I'm out of the habit of brain dumping on all of you fine folks!

Over the last week or two, I've started several posts, but haven't had time to finish them.  Or maybe I'm just not making them a priority...?  Hmmmm.

Actually, while we're on the subject, I'm ready to come clean and admit that I've been cheating on you. Sorta.  My free time is suddenly pulled in a different direction.  For those who check my picture of the day blog, you may have caught on to what I'm about to share.  Something I never thought I would do.  Sure, I thought I might work part time once all of my kids were in school, but attempting something like this was never, ever on my radar.

I've started selling Tastefully Simple. I used to be the girl who needed to be talked into hosting at-home parties, now I'm the one selling the stuff.  Honestly, I never thought I'd see the day.

Yes, this is going to be a {quick} shameless plug for my new business.  But I blog about my life and I have to share this because I'm truly having fun.  A lot of fun.  And I'm making money in the process, which really helps put Mike's mind at ease. I have the best of both worlds: I can have a flexible schedule while conversing with other grown ups as I earn an easy paycheck for products that sell themselves.  I basically get paid to party.  How great is that?

So here's my plug for those who have never heard of Tastefully Simple. (neither had I until I was invited to a party in February): Tastefully Simple sells convenient, easy to prepare foods that have little (or no) preservatives, artificially colors/flavors and MSG. Each product only requires 1 or 2 other ingredients to prepare, so they allow you more time with your family and help keep you out of the drive thru.

The food is delicious, will ship right to your door and the company offers a 100% satisfaction guarantee.  What I do as a consultant is facilitate "taste testing parties" where we sample a bunch of the products from the catalog - the host invites the guests and I supply to food.  That's what first had me hooked.  I thought, "Wait...I can have a party and she'll bring all the food?  Sold!"

But as I heard more about it, I realized that the low cost of the Business Blast Off Kit and the low risk of becoming a consultant (if I failed miserably, I could eat my display...I mean, it's FOOD after all!) made it worth checking out.  And once Mike picked apart the details, did the whole cost analysis, blah blah blah, I jumped in with both feet.

SO.  If anyone out there would like to try out these products by placing an order or, better yet, host a party where I supply the munchies, please let me know! It would be my pleasure to assist you. (insert cheesy grin here)  Or if you're not local and just want to try our mouth-watering beer bread or perfect-for-summer slushy drink buckets, feel free to check out the online catalog on my website.

That's all I'm going to say about that.  I don't want to bore you with this aspect of my life, but it's new and fun and exciting and I felt like I was keeping something from you by not sharing it for the last several weeks.  Now that all of my cards are out on the table, we will resume our regularly scheduled blog post topics. And hopefully I'll get my blogging groove back because I've genuinely missed writing!

Stay tuned, I have a few {finally finished} posts lined up over the next week...

Q&A Wednesday - How Do You Find Time to Blog?

Fleur asked, "I am a homeschool mother of five...ages 6 and under (four daughters and a 5 month old son)...and I would love to know how you got your blog started. My hubby keeps saying I should start one...which I did...but never managed to get past my first entry..."

Wow - five under six.  You must be one busy mama!  I can understand why you'd want to start a blog.  The days are long but the years are short...time flies when you're busy!  And you don't want to forget a minute of the sweet parts of these days you're living.

I started my blog in 2007 as a way to post funny stories and pictures of my kids for family and friends.  Friends of friends became readers, then some random moms in different parts of the country and around the world, so I started putting more general homemaking thoughts, ideas and recipes on there to appease a larger audience.

For me, it is easiest to blog during naps and in the evening.  When I was just journaling about our family, I wrote each post as if I was typing an email to a friend (since most of my readers were friends).  When something cute or funny happened, I'd jot it down on a notebook and type it up when I had time.  Back then, I was posting only a few times each month, so maybe start with the goal of once per weekend.  Since your husband wants you to keep up with the blog, maybe he'd be willing to take over with the kids for an hour or two every Saturday while you write posts and add pictures - ?  Just a thought.

Make it real no-pressure.  Don't try to make things look fancy or word everything perfectly or try to impress.  I always think about my blog as the storage place for our memories should our house ever burn down or should I get hit by a bus. Not fun to think about, but it's my mental insurance policy on things I might otherwise forget!

I hope that was helpful, Fleur!  Don't get overwhelmed by the task...just document the little, important things on your family blog and it will soon be a website full of memories!

100 followers and 150,000 hits

I'm a numbers girl, so it gets me a little giddy when I see that I have exactly 100 followers (through Google friend connect, that is) and my counter is sitting at 149,999 hits.

And YES, I am fully aware that I am a geek.

It amazes me that I felt like my goal of getting 100,000 hits by September, 2011 (the 101st goal on my 101 in 1001 list) was so far fetched, yet as soon as I view this published post, I'll probably be the 150,000th hit.

Update: In fact, I WAS the 150,000th hit and (of course) I just had to take a picture.

I wish I could fly out and hug each and every one of you to THANK YOU for reading my nonsense every day. Especially my follower(s) in Australia. And Switzerland. And New Zealand and the UK. And the Northern Mariana Islands sounds just lovely. And of course I'd love to visit my oldest friend in The Netherlands. And my new reader in Kenya. (Yes, I see you out there! I even peeked at your blog and you are an inspiration...washing your clothes by hand? I have a whole new perspective and hope I never complain about laundry again.)

Anyway, to all of you dear readers, near and far...THANK YOU!

XOXOX

PS - I've had several people request that I add an option on my blog to have my posts emailed to them directly and I have NO idea how to do that. Is anyone out there a technical genius who wants to offer to walk me through how to add that little widget???

Q&A Wednesday - "How do I leave a comment?"

With the contests I've been holding this summer, I've had several people tell me that they can't enter because they don't know how to leave a comment on a blog. It just occurred to me to write it all out for you so those of you who think you need to sign up for a Blogger account, can see that you DON'T need to!

Step 1: Go to the bottom of the post that you'd like to leave a comment. On my blog, it will say, "6 comments" or even "0 comments" - click on that.

Step 2: Once in the comments screen, type your comment in the text box at the top, right side of the screen.

Step 3: Select one of the options below.
- Log in with your Google (gmail) I.D. OR...
- Log in with an Open ID (for LiveJournal, WordPress, TypePad, AIM or you can type your own OR...

Ideas for Intentional Parenting

I don't get much controversy on my blog, but my recent post about How I Got my Babies to Sleep Through the Night definitely ruffled some feathers. For those who read my posts through a reader and don't know what I'm talking about, there were some opposing opinions and responses in the comments of that post, including a heart-wrenching situation from a reader whose two month old died of SIDS.

(By the way, one sleep association that I forgot to mention in that post was singing. I have sung the same song to each of my kids, probably until they were 2-3 years old, before bedtime and every nap. Maybe that's how "Rock-a-bye Baby" got it's fame! As I was singing to Jason the other day, it occurred to me how huge that sleep association has been for me. So, for those of you who read my post and are trying to figure out how to get your own babies to sleep well, whether you rock them to sleep or lay them down awake and drowsy, try picking a special song to sing to them each time!)

By nature, I'm a bit of a people pleaser, so hearing that the first commenter was going to potentially stop following me caught me off guard. Although I'm a fairly neutral person, I definitely have my own opinions and I have to realize that I can't please everyone. And since this blog is my outlet, sometimes my ideas are going to rub people the wrong way.

I never want to offend anyone, but the part of my personality that I'm complimented on the most (being "real" in my posts) can be just as easily turned into my greatest weakness. (being "too real" in my posts)

Some asked why I didn't delete the comments that disagreed with my opinions, but honestly, that thought never entered my mind. I'm fine with the comment section of my posts being a place for people to share their feelings and I have no intention of deleting comments unless they're really offensive or just plain mean.

This got me thinking about how and why I parent the way I do. Getting off the topic of babies, I want to talk for a minute about the little people we're raising and who we hope they become.

I remember being clueless about parenting when I was pregnant with Ryan. I thought I had it all figured out by watching what other people did "wrong" through the years, until it came down to doing it myself. Then I realized just how difficult parenting can be.

The best piece of advice I ever received about parenting was this: look at other people's children and how they behave. If you like what you see, be sure to listen to the advice of those parents. That doesn't take into consideration a child's natural temperament or personality, but overall, I've noticed that if I find a child with characteristics I desire for my own kids, I can usually look to their parents for guidance in those areas.

A few years ago, we spent a lot of time with a family whose son was around Ryan's age. He was a very mild-mannered boy (Ryan was still very impulsive), listened to his parents the first time (Ryan often tuned us out), was gentle and loving and kind (Ryan was an over-excited spaz in comparison) and Mike would leave these friends' house feeling horrible about the child we were raising.

But eventually, I noticed that this "perfect" boy's personality did have some drawbacks. For example, his parents were often frustrated when he played sports because he was rarely assertive enough to kick the ball in soccer or play proper defense in football. Sure, he was a natural rule follower, a "lover, not a fighter," but his passivity bothered his dad as much as Ryan's impulsivity (is that word???) bothered Mike.

Sometimes we just need to accept our kids the way they are and understand that what they're going through might be a phase.

I have one particular friend whose children are so amazing that, before she moved away, I used to hang on every word she said about parenting. Her youngest two boys are respectful little gentlemen and her oldest daughter, who just graduated from college, is headed to the Dominican Republic for a year with Campus Crusade for Christ.

I'll share a couple of the secrets she told me. She was the first person to encourage me to write a Family Mission Statement. It took a couple of years, but having that discussion with Mike, along with developing our House Rules has meant that we have a direction for our family.

Also, one of their big family values (in their mission statement) focuses on leadership. So in addition to her daughter being a cheerleader in high school, she was the senior class president, too. A popular, well-liked leader who was on fire for Christ. Talk about well rounded!

One last thing that I remember her telling me is that she intentionally opened their home for play dates and gladly accepted the role of carpool mom. She was able to make teachable moments out of the overheard conversations. "Do you remember when the girls were laughing about the outfit of another girl in school today? How did that make you feel? How could you have responded differently?" Things like that.

I also remember the first time I saw a toddler with good table manners at a restaurant. Upon asking his parents about it, they explained that they practiced "staying seated until everyone is finished" at home, so their kids had more dinner table stamina when they went out to eat.

One thing I find myself thinking about are the rebellious kids, especially the older ones. I realize most kids rebel in some way, but my hope is that the foundations I lay early on will encourage my own to return quickly if they develop a pattern of wrong choices.

(I know I'm getting long winded, but I have to share one final situation. Hang with me!)

Many pastors kids end up rebelling, but all three of our pastor's kids are in ministry and married to pastors. Mike asked our pastor's son about this once. Kind of a "what did your parents do right?" type of a question. He suggested that it was because his parents were pretty strict up until high school, then at that point, they loosened the reigns and let the kids make mistakes while they were still under their roof. By the time they went to college, they weren't confused about their new found freedom and didn't go off the deep end.

Our pastor's daughter cuts my hair, so I recently asked her the same question. Before hearing her brother's answer, she had several ideas about why she and her siblings didn't stray from the church. First, she told me that her family was the same at church as they were behind closed doors. Her dad was the same at home as he was up on stage and if the kids had been arguing in the car, they weren't expected to put on a happy face once they arrived at church. Basically, it sounds like they were allowed to be themselves and weren't expected to act a certain way just because their dad was a pastor.

She also said that she thinks all of the kids turned out the way they did because they each knew that, no matter what they did or how bad they were, their parents always loved them. She felt that she could go to them and discuss absolutely anything. She remembers talking and talking and talking things through. As kids, she said her father never spanked out of anger, but sent them to their rooms until he cooled off before giving the punishment. So by the time he explained why she was being disciplined, she said she usually understood why she was getting spanked and, even though she didn't want it, knew it was a consequence for a decision she made.

I don't know about you, but when I first heard all of that, I found it very refreshing. It seems like it would take the pressure out of being in the spotlight.

None of the parents I mentioned are perfect, but I certainly don't need to recreate the wheel when it comes to parenting. Personally, I'd rather learn from other people's mistakes and successes and adapt them to our own family, if possible.

This was way longer than I expected. I probably should have broken this into two posts, but I was on a roll and don't want to go back and fix it. For those of you who actually read till the end, hopefully I didn't bore you to death!!!

Have you gotten any amazing "how to" advice from other parents over the years?

Reverse Stalker

Intentionally Katie
It's 11pm and I can't sleep. I could do a miriad of things, productive things, relaxing things, but instead I'm on the computer, surrounded by piles of things that could should be put away, but I'm doing a bunch of nothing.

Wanna know what I just spent the last half hour doing? Reverse stalking some of YOU. I looked over at my list of followers on my sidebar and realized the number has jumped since I last noticed. I clicked on some of your pretty little faces and read some of your witty posts and left quietly without leaving a comment, just like you! It's a shock, I realize, but I can keep my big mouth to myself sometimes...

I even ran across a Latina follower whose blog is all in Espanol. Can I tell you how awesome I felt to understand at LEAST 30% of it? Maybe more. Not bad, considering I took six years of Spanish from 8th grade all the way through college. What a waste of perfectly good tax dollars! So whoever you are, your blog looks amazing. Cooking and organizing in Spanish...it doesn't get much cooler than that.

When my blog began reaching random little corners of the world, I would peek at the FeedJit list on the sidebar and wonder who was reading my thoughts. My best friend labeled me a reverse stalker when I asked if I should be concerned that people from random towns in remote parts of the world were returning to my blog regularly. I still wonder if there are creepy old men peering at pictures of my kids, but it appears most of you are fellow wives and mothers who just like reading about my ideas.

And I am humbled.

Feel free to leave a comment and say, "Hi" once in a while!

I'm still here!

Sorry for my lack of posts lately. It's a good thing this giveaway series is going on or no one would be visiting my dusty, neglected blog!

Truth is: I haven't been on the computer much these days. I've committed to staying away from the computer while the kids are awake and I'm kind of enjoying the sabbatical.

If you want to see snippits of my daily life, don't forget to check my POD {picture of the day} blog. I update that weekly.

I hope my American readers had a great holiday weekend. We enjoyed having Daddy home for three days and crammed in lots of work and lots of play.

Don't give up on me! I'll be back in my regular writing-once-a-day mode soon enough.

Enough about that: back to ME.

I honestly can't believe I've written 1000 posts. I knew I had a lot to say, but wow. That's almost one post per day! I'm rarely short on words, that's for sure.

In my first post (that was read by about 10 people), Kaylin was 8 months old...practically Jason's age. I began my blog as a way to update family and friends about the kids and their accomplishments. I barely knew what a blog WAS back then! In three short years, my online journal, "Three Blondes and a Redhead," blossomed into the parenting / cooking / organizing / crafting / all things frugal / homemaking soapbox that "Intentionally Katie" is today.

Do you know what I would REALLY love from you? To know who you are. There are hundreds of you out there reading my blog and I'd love to "meet" you. Especially those of you hiding in the shadows. If you've never commented before, please take a minute to say, "Hi!"

I guess this is my opportunity to say, "thank you" to all of my wonderful readers. I am still amazed that so many of you choose to spend your precious time reading my long-winded posts.

Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!

Uninspired

Have you noticed that I've been cheating for a while? Not cheating on you and certainly not cheating on Mike, just...cheating. Short cuts, if you will. My posts have mostly been Friday re-runs, meal plans or Q&A Wednesdays. I have managed to throw in a few posts about my kids, a recipe or two and some things I'm tackling on my 101 in 1001 list. But other than that, I've been feeling pretty uninspired lately - not sure why. I actually started the "Q&A Wednesday with Kay-tay" series because I had bloggers block. Does that exist or did I just create a condition? Regardless, I think I've contracted it.

Truth be told, I've sat down at the computer a dozen times in recent weeks to write something that was on my mind, but would get distracted or lose interest before I even thought of a title. I've been trying to spend less time on the computer, which is good, right? Mike and I have agreed to avoid all media (tv and computer) while the kids are awake. I check emails before the kids wake up, sit down and play around during Kaylin's nap (if I'm not sleeping, too) and I'll get caught up again after everyone's in bed at night.

That doesn't sound limited, but it's probably reduced my computer time to about half. I still need time to print coupons, make grocery lists, respond to emails and play with my pictures, plus post on my POD blog. Not to mention the dozens of blogs I follow - I'm mostly skimming their posts these days with a whopping 214 "I need to go back and read this/make this recipe/try this idea" posts saved in my blog reader. Oy.

But I do have some fun stuff up my sleeve. I'm quickly approaching my 1000th post and to celebrate, I'm going to have a ton of giveaways. Day after day after day of fun giveaways for YOU to win fun stuff from some generous companies that I've found. That's all going to happen next month, so stay tuned and check back daily for new giveaways.

I also want to share what I've been learning and applying in some books I've read, plus my thoughts on Food, Inc. Because I watched it. And I have thoughts.

So don't give up on me yet, dear readers and loyal fans. I'll come back around. Stella got her groove back and so can I.

I'm going to go play outside with my family now. I think today is the last decent weather Phoenix is going to have until November. Must go enjoy...
