Day 12: The Kids Closets

Today's assignment for the Spring Cleaning Challenge is to sort through the kids' closets.  I have a tendency to use my kids' closets as storage; mostly baby stuff and bins of clothes...their closets are both huge, so I figure I should utilize the space.

I am blessed with friends who give me hand-me-downs for Kaylin, so in her closet, there are bins of clothes for sizes that she hasn't yet grown into.  I also have paper grocery sacks (labeled with sizes) to throw clothes in as I get them.  This keeps me from avoiding pulling down the bins and keeping each size sorted together.
For hand-me-downs, I keep two bins for each size clothes: one for warm months and one for colder months.
Just the other day, I was at Good Will looking for wooden crates, and stumbled upon the cutest, like-new, size 8 dress from Limited, Too for $4.  I totally bought it and stuck it in the size 8 bag!  Yes, Kaylin currently wears size 5, but when you find a deal, you have to jump on it!
Before - Kaylin's closet - clothes that are in season are kept low and within reach.
After - It's officially warming up here in Phoenix, so I moved all of the long sleeved shirts to the top right rack and rotated some short sleeved/Spring items to the lower level.  (I don't want to pack them away yet, just in case it cools off or we travel someplace cool) On the top left are more summer outfits that are sleeveless.
In each child's closet, I have hanging cubbies.  At the beginning of the week, we check the weather forecast and put outfits in each day's cubbie.  For Kaylin, I include hair accessories, so we don't have to mess with it the day-of.
Before - Ryan/Jason's closet.  For Ryan, clothes that fit him now are down low, larger sizes are up high.  I keep a bin for outgrown clothes on the floor, so if something is too small, he can put it in there and save me the hassle of going through his clothes again and again.
After - I put his long sleeved and short sleeved shirts in color order and cleared off the shelf.  I wanted to get rid of the air mattress, but it's handy to keep inflated for sleepovers in Kaylin's room.
You never know what you're going to find when you open cabinets and drawers in Ryan's room.  This was in the {somewhat useless} shelving system in Ryan's closet.
This assignment took me three days to complete.  Not because it was difficult, but because Jason was always asleep in Ryan's room when I had time to work.  I finally just got busy one day while Jason was awake and allowed him to tear apart every other room upstairs.  (*sigh*)  Sometimes progress in one area means chaos everywhere else.
