Natural "Cough Syrup" Recipe

I'm not a huge fan of medicine, but I'm also not a huge fan of hearing my kids hack up a lung all night only to wake up exhausted the next day.
.
I found a cough suppressant recipe online a few months ago that used things I had in the house at the time and tweaked it a tiny bit. My kids cringe when they take a spoonful (then Ryan acts over dramatic and runs around the house, gagging and laughing) but I am amazed at how well it works. I keep this home remedy in my smallest Tupperware container in the fridge. My mom thought it was salad dressing when she babysat once and called me to verify that Ryan was correct in begging for some before bedtime.
.
1/4 t. red pepper flakes
1 T. apple cider vinegar
1 T. honey
2 T. water
.
1 teaspoon reduces coughing for quite a while. (I usually give this for a cough and Mucinex to break up the phlegm to attack the root of the problem) I hope it works for your family, too!

Thank you so much for this. My three year old has a terrible cough and I am going to try this.

I use an herb called Cherry Bark for the kids. It works great. I use the Herbs for Kids line. I also give my kids Sambucus (Elderberry) everyday as an immune booster. I haven't had to take the kids (I have two ages 2 & 4) to the doctors for 2 years and they never get sick anymore. Thought I would share. I know how miserable it is to have sick kids!

My mom used to give me a similar cough medicine when I was a kid but it only had honey and red pepper flakes. I have been suffering from a nasty cough for the past week and just made and used this. It instantly cut through my cough but the pepper burns! I used exact measurements but my mouth is still tingling. I used homemade dried/ crushed pepper flakes so I'm sure that's why its so hot. Do you recommend I use less pepper flakes for my kids dose?
