Q&A Wednesday - Being Flexible with Dinner

Julie asked, "Do you ever spontaneously go out to dinner, during the week? Even though you have meal planned and even half-prepped and then lost your taste and motivation?"

Ironically, just moments before receiving this question, I thought, "I'm kind of in the mood to go out tonight. I wonder if Mike would be up for that?" Then I changed my mind because the lasagna was all made and just needed to be popped into the oven.

I've found that our dining budget has been significantly lower since I began meal planning way back when. Before that, I called Mike at least once a week to see if we could eat out. Not when a meal was half-prepped, but usually because I couldn't figure out what to make and wasn't in the mood to be creative. Usually if I have a plan and have started making the meal and the end is in sight, I don't want to "waste" a valuable night out.

I will say this: every so often when Mike is in the mood to eat out and I have a dinner plan in mind, I will actually request that we stay home to eat. Partly because it screws up my master plan, but also because (again) I want to save our dining budget for a night that I'm too exhausted to cook.

Our monthly dining-out allowance is pretty lean, so when we do go out to eat, it's always with a coupon or on a "Kids Eat Free" night. We throw caution to the wind and spend full price on a dinner maybe 3-4 times a year. And that includes our anniversary and my birthday! I know - we're cheap.

Keep the questions coming! Leave a comment if you have something on your mind that I can answer next Wednesday.

I've got two questions for ya!
1. What activities do you have your kids use tickets for (in the Accountable kids system)? I need some ideas!!
2. HOW do you enforce your no tattling rule? Because, really, I don't care who poked who!! I would love to not feel like a mediator half the day!

Hi Katie,

I liked the question you answered today. Hat's off to you on being so strict with your dining out. We sometimes do 2 or 3 times a week take out, that's on a busy week for us.

I also like the question Carrie above is asking you, mine tattle a lot on the weekends so I'm worried how they will be during the summer.

So that leads me to my question for you. What plans do you have for the summer. This is your first summer with Jason so will it be more diffucult to do things you usually do. I babysit my baby cousin who will be 2 soon and she has a napping schedule and can't do everything outside yet without help and has to be constantly watched over. Any ideas or advise would be helpful. Thanks and have a great week.

My question - if you had a goal for yourself right now, what would your reward be? I'm teaching First Place at church right now, and i've made all my 'students' set goals and 'rewards' for the 12 week session. My goals are lose 10 lbs, meal plan, and track all food. i'm having the hardest time figuring out my reward...so i'm just curious what you would pick for a reward.

And this isn't a question, just a comment, great job on the Picture of the Day project! i have attempted this the last 2 years and failed big time!!! maybe just maybe i can pick a month and do a picture a day for a month. maybe? haha.
