Pretending with "Centers"

Ryan spent TWO HOURS the other day creating centers all around our house. In Kindergarten, they had daily centers/stations for reading, writing, spelling, stories, etc.

He created a food center...

(Ryan made Mike sit in the pantry with the snack choices he'd picked out for all of us)

...a drink center...

...with chocolate milk... (BTW, that's chocolate draining into my son's throat, not milk!)

...a tv center...

...a "playing with Jason" center... (that we needed to rush through because the main participant was ready for bed)

...a tattoo center...

...a musical chairs center...

...and a coloring center.

I did a poll and the favorites were:
Mike and me - musical chairs
Ryan - food
Kaylin - coloring
Jason - I'd guess the "playing with Jason" center.

I"m so glad Ryan (and the rest of the family) enjoyed doing that! Little Cub's schoolroom is also all about 'centers', and on the days they're allowed free choice, the kids have a 'kiesboord' (literal translation: choose board) where they put a magnet with their name on it under the picture of the center where they want to play. Each center is given a max number of children so not everyone can play with the same thing at once.

The knock-on effect of this? LC and his friends entertain themselves for AGES on playdates by drawing their own kiesboords here at home, then taking clothespins to select which center they want, and then making their way around the kiesboord and playing with most everything in the house. We even started doing this during school vacations when he's NOT playing with friends and quickly becomes 'bored' at home. Giving him the power to choose what order he wants to play with what, setting a timer for X number minutes at each station, and not allowing any repeating of stations until they've all been done once is a great way to diversify his play AND eat up a big chunk of time .... and we all know which of those is the more important priority. :-)

Yea for centers and kiesboords!

XOXOXOXOOXO

So cute! I love the imagination of a child. I hope they never outgrow it!

That is awesome! My daughter also did Centers this year, but it never occurred to me to have her replicate it at home. I love this idea and think that it will be put to good use during the sweltering Houston summer!
